Preliminary phase is the initial phase of the TOGAF ADM Process. In this phase the preparation and initiation activities for creating an Architecture Capability are carried out. It includes key activities
- Understanding business environment
- Get high level commitment from Management
- Scope is agreed
- Customize TOGAF
- Finalize architecture principles and governance structure.
Objectives of Preliminary Phase
Determine the Architecture capability wanted by the organization
- Review organizations needs for conducting enterprise architecture
- Identify the scope of the enterprise architecture that needs to be conducted
- Identify existing frameworks, processes, methods that could affect the Architecture Capability
- Determine the Capability Maturity target
Establish Architecture Capability
- Establish organization model for Enterprise Architecture
- Define process and resources
- Implement tools
- Define Architecture Principles
Approach
- Determine the Enterprise — Determine the scope of the enterprise, identify sponsor.
- Identify key drivers and elements in the Organization Context — Commercial reasons, budgets, stakeholders, organization’s culture, current processes, Baseline Architecture landscape, skills and capabilities of the enterprise
- Define requirements for architectural work — Business requirements, Cultural aspirations, Organization intents, Strategic intent, forecast financial requirements.
- Define Architecture Principles
- Define Framework for Architecture development — TOGAF can be combined with other frameworks such as Business Capability Management, Portfolio/Project Management, Operations Management, Solution Development Methods
- Define relationship between Management framework
- Evaluate Enterprise Architecture Maturity — Capability Maturity Models CMM are used to assess different capabilities of an organization.
